As children we are thought that to read is to achieve our goals. We didn’t always choose to believe the adults that told us that but in time we learned that perhaps they knew something after all. We most certainly didn’t admit it, but they knew by the way we handled a book.

We started out by saying, “No! I don’t want to read!!” We didn’t pick up a book voluntarily and we sure as heck didn’t let anyone catch us looking inside those hallowed pages, even if we were only looking at the pictures.

Our teachers told us that if we couldn’t read, we couldn’t do hardly anything in school. We wouldn’t understand what was going on. They said we couldn’t do math, but we thought we proved ourselves by doing it anyway. In reality we were only fooling ourselves. We were reading all along.
